Punk Planet

Punk Planet was founded by Dan Sinker in Chicago in 1994, beginning as a photocopied zine focused on punk rock culture, independent media, and political commentary. Sinker served as the publication's editor throughout its entire run, building it into one of the most respected independent music and culture magazines of its era.

Punk Planet ceased publication in 2007 after a 13-year run, with founder Dan Sinker citing financial pressures and the declining viability of independent print media. The closure reflected broader challenges facing independent zines and magazines in the mid-2000s as readership and advertising migrated online.

While both publications covered punk culture, Punk Planet placed greater emphasis on long-form political commentary, independent literature, and global social issues alongside its music coverage. The magazine distinguished itself with higher production values and a broader editorial scope than Maximum Rocknroll's more traditional punk scene focus.

After Punk Planet closed in 2007, Dan Sinker gained widespread attention for the satirical @MayorEmanuel Twitter account during the 2011 Chicago mayoral race, which was later revealed to be his creation. He subsequently moved into digital media and academic roles, including work related to journalism innovation and media studies.
