Purple Skimmer

The Purple Skimmer is typically found in tropical habitats, preferring warm, marshy environments and slow-moving freshwater pools. Sightings are most commonly reported in specific regions of Southeast Asia, depending on the exact skimmer species in question. They are highly active during sunny daylight hours, often hovering directly over the water's edge.

The deep violet hues on the male Purple Skimmer's abdomen develop as the insect fully matures, a process driven by the accumulation of pigments and structural coloration. This striking visual display is primarily used to attract mates and establish territorial dominance against rival males. Females of the species generally lack this bright coloring to maintain natural camouflage.

Like most dragonflies, the Purple Skimmer is an opportunistic predatory insect that feeds on smaller flying insects, such as mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. They are highly agile hunters, catching their prey directly in mid-air using their specialized legs as a basket. This insectivorous diet makes them highly beneficial for natural pest control in their ecosystems.

While their aquatic nymph stage can last for several months to a year underwater, the adult flying Purple Skimmer has a relatively short lifespan. Once they emerge and develop their wings and mature coloring, adults typically live for only a few weeks to a couple of months. Their primary goal during this brief adult stage is to successfully mate and lay eggs.
