Puyo Puyo 2 (1994, by Compile for Sega arcade systems) is known for advanced chain timing and chain-counter strategy in head-to-head play. Its ability to trigger and cancel opponent chains became a signature competitive mechanic. That feature is what separated it from simpler match-and-clear predecessors.

The sequel deepened puzzle risk-reward systems and made chain planning more punishing but also more rewarding. It refined race-to-penalties timing so one sequence could rapidly shift game state. As a result, advanced players often treat 2 as the real strategic baseline of the franchise.

It was initially a Sega arcade release and later appeared in multiple re-releases and compilations. If you want close-to-original mechanics and timing, arcade-style ports and dedicated ports are usually preferred over casual mobile variants.
