Pytheas

description Pytheas Overview

Pytheas was a Greek navigator, geographer, and astronomer from Massalia, the ancient city corresponding to Marseille, who traveled during the fourth century BCE. His lost account described Britain, northern European coasts, tidal behavior, and a remote northern region called Thule. Although his work survives only through quotations and summaries by later authors, it is an important early Mediterranean record of the North Atlantic world.

help Pytheas FAQ

Did Pytheas really sail around Britain?

Ancient writers report that Pytheas explored Britain and described its coastline, inhabitants, and tides during the fourth century BCE. His own account is lost, so the precise route must be reconstructed from later authors such as Strabo and Pliny.

What did Pytheas mean by Thule?

Thule was his name for a far northern region reportedly reached after sailing north from Britain. Iceland, coastal Norway, and other northern locations have been proposed, but no identification is universally accepted.

Why did ancient writers doubt Pytheas?

His reports of extremely long summer days, northern seas, and unfamiliar frozen conditions sounded implausible to Mediterranean readers. Strabo was notably hostile, even though several phenomena Pytheas described are consistent with high northern latitudes.

What scientific observations are associated with Pytheas?

Pytheas connected ocean tides with the Moon and used astronomical observations to estimate latitude. Pliny also preserved a report attributed to him about the unusually large tides around Britain.
