The 2000 period film focuses on the final years of the infamous French author Marquis de Sade. It centers on his imprisonment at the Charenton insane asylum under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. The movie explores his continuous attempts to smuggle his scandalous writings out of the asylum to be published.

The Marquis is portrayed by Australian actor Geoffrey Rush, who received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for the role. His performance captures the arrogant, theatrical, yet undeniably brilliant nature of the controversial writer. Rush's dynamic performance anchors the film's dark, satirical tone.

Kate Winslet plays Madeleine 'Maddy' LeClerc, the asylum laundress who secretly smuggles de Sade's manuscripts to a publisher. Joaquin Phoenix plays the Abbé de Coulmier, the progressive, young priest running Charenton. Michael Caine also stars as Dr. Royer-Collard, the cruel, hypocritical doctor sent to cure de Sade of his obsessions.

While based on historical figures and events, the screenplay by Doug Wright takes significant dramatic liberties for theatrical effect. It is a fictional exploration of censorship, morality, and the consequences of extreme obsession rather than a factual documentary. Wright adapted the script from his own 1995 stage play of the same name.
