Rafael Moneo

Moneo won the 1996 Pritzker Prize for architecture that combines modern design with careful attention to history and urban context. His buildings often respond closely to older cities rather than trying to overpower them.

The National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida opened in 1986 and is one of Moneo's best-known buildings. Its brick arches echo Roman construction while creating a modern museum for archaeological collections.

Moneo designed an expansion of Madrid's Atocha railway station in the late 20th century. The project is known for integrating new circulation and public space with the historic station complex.

The Kursaal is Moneo's conference and cultural center in San Sebastian, completed in the late 1990s. Its two translucent volumes face the Bay of Biscay and became a landmark for the city.
