Ralph Alpher was an American physicist and cosmologist whose research helped establish the modern Big Bang model. As a graduate student working with George Gamow, he developed calculations describing how light atomic nuclei could form in the early universe. The resulting 1948 paper, published under the names Alpher, Bethe, and Gamow, became known as the alpha-beta-gamma paper, although Hans Bethe's name was added as a joke. Alpher and Robert Herman also predicted relic background radiation from the early universe.
