Rancid

Rancid was formed in Berkeley, California, and features the core duo of Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen on vocals and guitars. The band is rounded out by Matt Freeman on bass guitar and Branden Steineckert on drums. Armstrong and Freeman had previously played together in the influential ska-punk band Operation Ivy before forming Rancid.

Rancid is primarily known for their high-energy blend of hardcore punk rock and traditional Jamaican ska. Emerging from the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area scene of the late 1980s, they helped popularize the third-wave ska movement. Their music is heavily characterized by driving basslines, punk-rock drum beats, and politically charged lyrics.

Rancid's most commercially successful and arguably most famous album is ...And Out Come the Wolves, released in 1995. This record featured major hit singles like Ruby Soho and Time Bomb, which gained massive rotation on MTV. It cemented their status as one of the leading bands in the 1990s punk revival.

Despite achieving massive mainstream popularity, Rancid notably refused to sign with major labels like Madonna's Maverick Records during their peak. Instead, they chose to remain on independent punk label Epitaph Records. This decision earned them immense respect within the punk community and gave them total creative control over their politically charged output.
