description Raybearer Overview
Jordan Ifueko's Raybearer, published in 2020, begins a young adult fantasy series set in an invented empire influenced by West African storytelling and mythology. Its protagonist, Tarisai, grows up longing for connection before becoming involved with the Crown Prince's council. A magical command imposed by her mother threatens the relationships she forms there, turning the promise of belonging into a conflict between affection and obedience. Tarisai's struggle raises questions about inherited duties, unequal power and whether a prescribed destiny can be resisted. The novel suits readers of African-inspired fantasy who want court politics and an emotionally focused coming-of-age story. Its distinctive tension comes from a heroine seeking the very bonds her mother's command puts at risk.
