Alexander Glazunov composed the score, and Marius Petipa choreographed the original Imperial Ballet production. Raymonda premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg in 1898.

Raymonda is engaged to the crusader Jean de Brienne but is pursued and abducted by the Saracen knight Abderakhman. Jean returns, defeats his rival and marries Raymonda in the final act.
