description Raymonda Overview
help Raymonda FAQ
Who composed Raymonda, and who created its original choreography?
Alexander Glazunov composed the score, and Marius Petipa choreographed the original Imperial Ballet production. Raymonda premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg in 1898.
What happens to Raymonda in the original ballet?
Raymonda is engaged to the crusader Jean de Brienne but is pursued and abducted by the Saracen knight Abderakhman. Jean returns, defeats his rival and marries Raymonda in the final act.
Why is the Grand Pas Hongrois often performed without the full ballet?
The third act contains celebrated Hungarian-style variations and ensemble dances that work effectively as a gala excerpt. Many companies stage these dances even when they do not mount Raymonda's full three-act medieval narrative.
How does Tamara Rojo's Raymonda differ from Petipa's version?
Rojo moves the story from the Crusades to the Crimean War and recasts Raymonda as a nurse with greater control over her future. English National Ballet premiered this production at the London Coliseum in 2022.
