Red Wing Iron Ranger

The boot is named after the iron miners of the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota, who required incredibly tough footwear for their demanding work. Red Wing designed the boot with a double-layered leather toe cap and extra durability to withstand the harsh, abrasive environment of the iron mines.

The modern Iron Ranger is equipped with a Vibram® ZG Cube outsole, which provides excellent slip resistance and traction on slick surfaces. This polyurethane outsole replaced the older, traditional oil-resistant nitrile cork sole to meet modern safety standards while keeping the classic aesthetic.

Because the boots feature thick, full-grain leather uppers and a rigid Goodyear welt construction, the break-in process can be tough and usually takes a few weeks of regular wear. It is highly recommended to wear them for just a few hours a day at first and to regularly apply Red Wing's leather conditioner to soften the materials.

Yes, the Iron Ranger utilizes Goodyear welt construction, meaning the upper and lower parts of the boot are stitched rather than glued together. This traditional construction allows a skilled cobbler to completely remove the worn-out Vibram outsole and stitch on a brand new one, extending the life of the boot for decades.
