Red-winged Grasshopper

The Red-winged Grasshopper (Oedipoda germanica) gets its name from the vivid red coloration on its translucent hind wings, which are highly visible during flight. When at rest, the grasshopper folds these wings, revealing a camouflaged grey or brown exterior. This bright coloring acts as a sudden startle mechanism against potential predators.

This European insect is native to dry, open habitats such as grasslands, steppes, and rocky areas across Europe. It thrives in warm environments where the vegetation is sparse, allowing it to bask in the direct sunlight. They rely on this specific barren terrain for both camouflage and thermal regulation.

The species Oedipoda germanica was officially first described in the year 1804. It belongs to the Acrididae family, which is the largest family of grasshoppers globally. Over the centuries, it has remained a distinct species easily identifiable by its Latin binomial.

Like most grasshoppers in the Acrididae family, the Red-winged Grasshopper is primarily herbivorous. It feeds on a variety of wild grasses, herbs, and low-lying vegetation found in its dry European habitats. Their feeding habits rarely cause significant agricultural damage due to their preference for wild scrublands over cultivated crops.
