Requiem for a Dream (2000)

'Requiem for a Dream' is based on the 1978 novel of the same name written by author Hubert Selby Jr. Darren Aronofsky directed the film adaptation, and Selby himself co-wrote the screenplay. Selby even makes a cameo appearance in the film as a prison guard laughing during the incarceration scene.

Sara Goldfarb's storyline ends in tragedy after she becomes severely addicted to amphetamine diet pills prescribed to help her lose weight for a television appearance. She suffers a complete psychological breakdown and undergoes electroconvulsive therapy, leaving her in a delusional state. The final scene shows her imagining herself hugging her son on a game show, a stark contrast to her grim reality.

The film originally received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA due to its intense depictions of drug use, sexuality, and psychological horror. Rather than editing the film to secure an R rating, director Darren Aronofsky chose to release it as 'Unrated.' This decision limited its theatrical release but preserved the film's uncompromising artistic vision.

The haunting and iconic soundtrack was composed by Clint Mansell. The main theme, titled 'Lux Aeterna,' became incredibly popular and has been widely used in movie trailers and commercials since the film's release in 2000. The Kronos Quartet performed the memorable string arrangements for the score.
