The series ran for a total of three critically acclaimed seasons on FX, concluding in September 2023. The creators, Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo, intentionally chose to end the story after three seasons rather than dragging it out. The final season focuses heavily on the characters coming to terms with grief and their future paths.

The show is set in a fictional, rural Indigenous community in eastern Oklahoma. The setting is heavily inspired by the actual hometown of co-creator Sterlin Harjo, who is a Seminole/Muscogee filmmaker. The Oklahoma landscape, local slang, and indigenous traditions play a massive, authentic role in the storytelling.

The core teenage cast is played by D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Bear Smallhill, Devery Jacobs as Elora Danan Postoak, Lane Factor as Cheese, and Paulina Alexis as Willie Jack. All four young actors are of Indigenous descent, marking a historic moment for Native representation in television. Their natural chemistry is widely considered the heart of the series.

The series is produced by FX Productions and was released exclusively on Hulu in the United States. It was the very first television series to feature an entirely Indigenous team of writers, directors, and series regulars. International viewers can typically find it streaming on Disney+ under the Star banner.
