Starting with a high concentration like 0.1% often causes excessive peeling and irritation. Once the skin builds tolerance, the strength can be adjusted accordingly.

It is generally advised not to apply them simultaneously because benzoyl peroxide can oxidize tretinoin, making the retinoid less effective. Most dermatologists recommend applying benzoyl peroxide in the morning and Retin-A at night. Alternatively, they can be applied at different times of the day to prevent interaction.

The purging and adjustment phase typically lasts for the first few weeks, meaning acne might look worse before it gets better. Noticeable improvements in pore clearing and blemish reduction usually occur after 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Full results from the accelerated skin cell turnover often require several months of nightly application.

To minimize the dryness commonly associated with topical retinoids, many users apply a layer of moisturizer first, let it dry, and then apply the Retin-A. This buffers the medication and reduces irritation while still delivering active ingredients. Alternatively, you can apply Retin-A to completely dry skin and layer moisturizer on top once it absorbs.
