He taught at Harvard University and became associated with behaviorist approaches to psychology. Herrnstein is also known for co-authoring The Bell Curve with Charles Murray, a 1994 book that discussed intelligence and social outcomes and generated extensive academic and public debate about measurement, heredity, and inequality.
