Robert H. Widmer

Robert H. Widmer was an American aeronautical engineer who famously led the design of the Convair B-58 Hustler, the first operational bomber capable of sustained Mach 2 flight. Later in his career, he also played a major role in the development of the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. His innovative work fundamentally changed modern fighter and bomber design.

Widmer spent the majority of his illustrious career working for Convair, which later became General Dynamics. His senior design work at these firms produced some of the most iconic Cold War military aircraft. Eventually, he retired as a vice president of science and engineering at the Textron Corporation.

Widmer led the design effort for the delta-winged Convair B-58 Hustler in the 1950s, with the aircraft officially entering service with the United States Air Force in 1960. At the time, the Hustler was a massive technological leap forward, utilizing a lightweight stainless steel honeycomb construction. Widmer was remarkably young when tasked with leading this high-speed bomber program.
