Robert L. Chapman was an American lexicographer, professor of English literature, and editor of reference works. He edited the fourth and fifth editions of Roget's International Thesaurus, published in 1977 and 1992, and also edited HarperCollins' New Dictionary of American Slang in 1986 and the Thesaurus of American Slang in 1989. Chapman retained Roget's thematic category system while adding modern vocabulary and using computer databases to study contemporary usage.
