Robert Staughton Lynd was an American sociologist best known for community research conducted with Helen Merrell Lynd. Their book Middletown, published in 1929, examined work, family life, religion, education, leisure, and social divisions in Muncie, Indiana, which they presented under a pseudonym. The Lynds returned to the community during the Great Depression for the follow-up study Middletown in Transition.
