The RØDE NTR is an active ribbon microphone developed by the Australian manufacturer RØDE. It uses an approximately 1.8-micron ribbon element, a figure-eight pickup pattern, and internal active electronics that require phantom power. Its extended frequency response distinguishes it from more traditionally dark-sounding ribbon designs, and it is intended for studio recording of instruments, amplifiers, ensembles, and other sources suited to bidirectional pickup.

Why does the RØDE NTR need phantom power if it is a ribbon microphone?

The NTR contains active electronics that raise and condition the ribbon element's output. It therefore requires standard 48-volt phantom power, unlike a passive ribbon such as the Beyerdynamic M 160.

Can the RØDE NTR record sound from both sides?

Yes. Its figure-eight pattern captures the front and rear while strongly rejecting sound arriving from the sides.

Is the NTR suitable for electric guitar cabinets?

Yes, its ribbon response can smooth the aggressive upper frequencies of a close-miked guitar speaker. The active output also makes it easier to use with ordinary modern microphone preamps than many low-output passive ribbons.

How fragile is the ribbon inside the RØDE NTR?

Its ribbon is extremely thin, at approximately 1.8 microns, so blasts of moving air should still be avoided. RØDE designed the microphone with an internal shock-mounting system to protect the element from handling and external vibration.
