RStudio Server Pro was the commercial server-based edition of RStudio, allowing users to work in the familiar graphical development environment through a web browser. Code executed on a Linux server, so a headless machine could provide an interactive R workspace without a locally attached display. This made it useful for remote academic and institutional computing. The product added administrative and session-management capabilities beyond the open-source server edition.

Posit documents its later renaming to RStudio Workbench, now Posit Workbench, in the rename announcement. It remains a relevant name when reading older deployment guides or identifying an existing installation. Server resources can reduce dependence on the local computer's processing power, but session stability still depends on the server and its configuration.
