Rudolf Nureyev revolutionized the role of the male ballet dancer, transforming it from a supportive partner to a dynamic, charismatic star of equal footing with the ballerina. His 1961 defection from the Soviet Union at Le Bourget airport was a geopolitical sensation that catapulted him to global fame.
