Rusty Percher

The Rusty Percher is a species of dragonfly found widely distributed across mainland Australia. They are highly adaptable and are often spotted in a variety of habitats resting on bare earth.

The adult male is highly distinctive due to its bright rusty-red coloration across its body and abdomen. This contrasts heavily with the duller browns or yellows typically seen in females or younger males.

Unlike many dragonfly species that prefer to perch on elevated vegetation or twigs, the Rusty Percher has a distinct habit of resting flat on bare ground. This behavior makes them easier to spot along dirt paths and exposed rocks.

While some Australian dragonflies are famous for massive migratory swarms, the Rusty Percher is generally considered a resident species that remains in its local habitat year-round. They are most active during the warmer Australian months.
