description Saemangeum Overview
Saemangeum is a coastal estuarine area on South Korea's Yellow Sea coast, near Gunsan and Buan. The Saemangeum reclamation project began in 1991 and used a 33-kilometre seawall, completed in 2010, to enclose tidal flats for planned reclaimed land and a freshwater lake. The project became an environmental controversy because enclosing the estuary altered tidal exchange, water quality, and habitat used by migratory shorebirds.
