Salado Salamander

The Salado Salamander is a rare aquatic amphibian endemic exclusively to the spring outflows of the Salado Creek system in Bell County, Texas. Because it requires clean, oxygen-rich spring water to survive, it cannot be found anywhere else outside of this specific ecological niche.

The Salado Salamander (Eurycea chisholmensis) is officially listed as a federally threatened species due to its highly restricted habitat and population decline. Its survival is directly threatened by over-pumping of local groundwater, which reduces the flow of the springs it relies on to breathe.

Like other neotenic salamanders in the Eurycea genus, the Salado Salamander retains its external gills throughout its entire lifespan. Because it never leaves the water to develop lungs, it relies entirely on these feathery red gills to extract dissolved oxygen from the fast-moving spring currents.

Conservationists and local authorities in Bell County are working to establish protective measures around the Salado Creek watershed to safeguard the species. These efforts focus on reducing groundwater depletion and mitigating urban pollution runoff that threatens the pristine water quality required by Eurycea chisholmensis.
