Why are there so few expeditions to Saltoro Kangri?
The mountain rises beside the Siachen region and the militarized Actual Ground Position Line. Restricted access, political sensitivity, extreme altitude, and technical snow-and-ice terrain make ordinary commercial expeditions unrealistic.
Is Saltoro Kangri the same mountain as K2?
No. Saltoro Kangri is a 7,742-metre summit in the Saltoro Mountains, while K2 is the much higher 8,611-metre peak in the Baltoro area of the Karakoram.
Why is Saltoro Kangri sometimes called Peak 36?
Peak 36 was the designation used in early expedition accounts before Saltoro Kangri became the standard name. A British party involving John Hunt attempted the mountain under that earlier name in 1935.
