Unlike his more polished pop hits, Night Beat features Sam Cooke in a stripped-down, blues-influenced setting backed by a small combo. The record includes pianist Ray Johnson and saxophonist Bobby Lorenzono, giving it a distinct, late-night club atmosphere.

The album was famously recorded in a single overnight session on February 25, 1963. It was released later that year under the RCA Victor label.

The tracklist consists mostly of soul and blues standards, including Cooke's renditions of "Little Red Rooster" and "You Gotta Move." These tracks highlighted his roots in gospel and blues music rather than commercial pop.
