description Sargassum muticum Overview
Sargassum muticum, commonly called Japanese wireweed, is a large brown alga native to the northwest Pacific, including Japan, Korea, and nearby Russian waters. It has branched, olive-brown fronds and grows from the lower intertidal into shallow subtidal habitats. After introduction to the Pacific coast of North America and the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Europe, it established populations outside its native range and is treated as an invasive non-native seaweed in many of those areas.
