Sarobetsu Wetland

Late spring through summer brings successive blooms across the peatland, including yellow daylilies and other northern wetland plants. Conditions vary by year, but the boardwalk areas are generally most colorful during Hokkaido's short growing season.

Visitors use raised boardwalks around facilities such as the Sarobetsu Wetland Center. Staying on these paths protects the fragile peat surface and lets people observe the plants without trampling their habitat.

The wetland supports waterfowl and migratory species, including geese and swans, and the surrounding region is known for birds such as the yellow-breasted bunting. Its location in northern Hokkaido makes it an important stop on migration routes between northern breeding areas and wintering grounds.

Sarobetsu forms the lowland wetland portion of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. The park also includes the very different landscapes of Rishiri Island and Rebun Island off Hokkaido's northwest coast.
