Scientific American

Scientific American was first published in August 1845 by Rufus Porter. It holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the United States.

Historically, Scientific American was published as a weekly broadsheet newspaper for over 150 years. It transitioned to its current monthly magazine format in the late 1970s to adapt to changing scientific journalism landscapes.

A distinguishing feature of Scientific American is that many of its feature articles are written by the actual scientists, researchers, or Nobel laureates who conducted the work. This practice contrasts with other popular science magazines that rely primarily on staff journalists.

Scientific American is currently owned by Springer Nature, a major global academic publishing company. They acquired the magazine when their parent entity, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, merged with Springer Science+Business Media in 2015.
