Crystal is a photographer and Amber is her dog, and they befriend Shaggy and Scooby in the desert. The story later reveals that both are friendly shapeshifting extraterrestrials investigating Earth, changing the usual fake-monster formula. The gang is stranded after the Mystery Machine breaks down in the desert, leading them to mechanic Buck and the Search for Alien Lifeforms group, or SALF.
