Scuppernong Prairie

Scuppernong Prairie is in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest, in the southern part of the forest near the Scuppernong River area. It is a remnant wet prairie rather than a dry upland prairie. Poor drainage keeps parts of the site wet and supports plants adapted to saturated conditions.

The soils are both poorly drained and acidic, conditions that are uncommon across many managed landscapes. Those conditions help preserve regionally rare plant communities at the site.

Scuppernong Prairie is an open grass and herb community shaped by wet ground, while nearby Kettle Moraine areas can contain oak woods, savanna, and other upland habitats. Its value comes from maintaining a small wet-prairie remnant with acidic soils and rare plants.
