Seduced and Abandoned

Seduced and Abandoned (original Italian title: Sedotta e abbandonata) was directed by Pietro Germi and released in 1964. It followed Germi's international success with Divorce Italian Style (1961) and continued his sharp satirical exploration of Sicilian social codes and legal absurdities.

The film follows a young Sicilian man who seduces his fiancée's younger sister, triggering a scandal that forces both families to navigate rigid honor codes, legal maneuvering, and the prospect of a reparatory marriage. Germi uses this premise to satirize the Sicilian traditions of bride kidnapping, honor killings, and families using the legal system to force marriages that restore their reputation.

Both films were directed by Pietro Germi and satirize archaic Italian laws and provincial customs surrounding marriage and honor. While Divorce Italian Style tackled the impossibility of legal divorce in Italy (divorce was not legalized until 1970), Seduced and Abandoned examines how those same honor traditions trap families into coercive arrangements that benefit no one.

The film was screened at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, where it received recognition for its comedic treatment of serious social issues. Germi had already won the Best Comedy distinction at Cannes for Divorce Italian Style in 1962, and Seduced and Abandoned reinforced his international reputation as a master of dark Italian comedy.
