Sega Saturn

The Sega Saturn was released by Sega in 1994 in Japan, initially hitting the market before its primary competitors. It was later brought to North America and Europe in 1995. The console marked Sega's entry into the 32-bit, fifth generation of home video game hardware.

The Sega Saturn struggled commercially primarily because its complex dual-CPU architecture made it notoriously difficult for third-party developers to program games for. Additionally, Sega surprised the market by launching the console in North America earlier than announced, which angered major retailers. These missteps gave Sony's PlayStation a massive opening to dominate the market.

The Sega Saturn was distinguished by a highly complex dual-CPU architecture utilizing two Hitachi SH-2 processors. While this made software development difficult, it allowed the hardware to render technically advanced 2D graphics and sprite scaling. Because of this specific architecture, it became highly regarded for its massive library of 2D fighting games and shoot-'em-ups.

Despite its commercial struggles, the Sega Saturn hosted several critically acclaimed titles, particularly in the arcade port genre. Games like "NiGHTS into Dreams..." and "Virtua Fighter 2" heavily showcased the console's impressive graphical capabilities. It also possessed an incredible library of 2D shoot-'em-ups that rarely made it to Western shores.
