Sergei Yesenin

Yesenin grew up in Konstantinovo in the Ryazan region, and rural Russia became central to his lyric imagery. His poems often use birches, fields, horses, and village speech to contrast peasant life with modern urban change.

Confessions of a Hooligan is one of Yesenin's best-known self-dramatizing works from the early Soviet period. It helped cement the public image of Yesenin as both a lyric poet and a rebellious literary personality.

Yesenin married the American dancer Isadora Duncan in 1922. Their marriage was brief, but it drew international attention because Duncan was already famous in Europe and the United States.

Yesenin died in Leningrad in December 1925 at the age of 30. His final years and death became part of the mythology around him, especially in Russian literary memory.
