Shakuntala

Shakuntala is a legendary heroine from classical Hindu literature who first appears in the "Mahabharata" epic. She is a forest-dwelling woman who marries King Dushyanta, but he forgets her due to a curse until a signet ring restores his memory.

The ancient Indian poet Kalidasa wrote "Abhijnanasakuntalam" (The Recognition of Shakuntala), a Sanskrit drama that is considered one of the greatest works of classical Indian literature. Kalidasa is widely regarded as the foremost poet and dramatist of Sanskrit literature.

In Kalidasa's play, the reconciliation between Shakuntala and King Dushyanta depends on a lost signet ring that restores the king's cursed memory, adding a romantic and emotional arc. The original Mahabharata version is more straightforward and does not include the ring motif.

Kalidasa's "Abhijnanasakuntalam" was one of the first Sanskrit works translated into English and other European languages in the late 18th century, and its discovery caused a sensation in Western literary circles. Goethe was famously enthusiastic about the play, and it became a key text introducing Indian literature to the West.
