Shure WL185

The Shure WL185 is technically a condenser lavalier microphone capsule designed to attach to a Shure wireless bodypack transmitter rather than being a standalone wired mic. It features a TA4F connector that plugs directly into compatible Shure wireless systems. To use it, you must have a functioning wireless transmitter and receiver setup.

The WL185 features a highly directional cardioid polar pattern, which provides exceptional off-axis rejection of background noise. This makes it significantly better at capturing clear speech in loud environments compared to omnidirectional lavaliers. It is a favorite for theatrical productions, broadcasting, and professional podcasting.

Because it is a condenser element, the WL185 requires power, but it draws that power directly from the wireless transmitter bodypack it is plugged into. You do not need an external phantom power supply like you would with a standard studio condenser microphone. As long as the bodypack has a battery or is powered on, the mic will function.

While it is physically possible, the WL185 is tuned specifically for capturing the human voice, making it perfect for voiceover artists and public speakers. Its cardioid pattern and frequency response are optimized for speech intelligibility, not the broader frequencies of musical instruments. For instruments, a dedicated clip-on instrument mic or a small diaphragm condenser would yield much better results.
