description Sigma Octantis Overview
Sigma Octantis is a yellow-white giant star located in the southern circumpolar constellation Octans. With an apparent visual magnitude of approximately 5.4, it is a relatively faint star that requires dark skies to be seen by the unaided human eye. It is currently the closest visible star to the south celestial pole, functioning as the southern counterpart to Polaris. However, because of its dimness and its angular distance of just over one degree from the true pole, it is not as practically useful for celestial navigation as its northern equivalent.
