Simpson: Symphony No. 3

Robert Simpson composed his Symphony No. 3 in 1962, firmly establishing his reputation as a formidable symphonist. The piece was notably dedicated to the renowned symphonic composer Havergal Brian. It was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony is notable for its rigorous exploration of classical forms through a modern harmonic language, entirely structured around a single continuous movement. It brilliantly evolves from a quiet opening into massive, complex fugal climaxes. This structure reflects Simpson's deep interest in the music of Beethoven and Bruckner.

Despite its massive, complex sound, the symphony is scored for a surprisingly standard classical orchestra. It relies on a large string section, double woodwinds, four horns, and standard brass. It notably omits an overwhelming array of percussion, focusing purely on tonal mass.

The most famous and widely recommended recordings of Simpson's symphonies were made by the Hyperion Records label. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vernon Handley, provides a definitive interpretation of this 1962 work. These recordings are highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century British music.
