description Sleeping Venus Overview

Sleeping Venus is a reclining nude begun by Giorgione around 1510 and generally understood to have been completed in part by Titian after Giorgione's death. The sleeping figure is arranged parallel to the contours of an open landscape, integrating the human body with the natural setting. The painting became an important model for later Venetian nudes and is now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.

help Sleeping Venus FAQ

Did Giorgione or Titian paint the Sleeping Venus?

The painting is generally attributed primarily to Giorgione, who died around 1510 before all work on it was complete. Titian is traditionally believed to have finished parts of the landscape and other details.

Why is the Sleeping Venus important in the history of reclining nudes?

It places a full-length nude within an open landscape and aligns her body with the hills behind her. This influential formula was later transformed by Titian in the indoor, awake Venus of Urbino.

Was there originally a Cupid in the Sleeping Venus?

Technical examination and earlier records indicate that a Cupid once appeared near the reclining figure's feet. The damaged figure was painted out during a later restoration.

Where is Giorgione's Sleeping Venus displayed?

It is held by the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. The painting is therefore also commonly called the Dresden Venus.
