Slinky Original Metal

The Slinky was invented by Richard James, a naval mechanical engineer, in 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He discovered the toy's properties when a torsion spring fell from a shelf and appeared to "walk" end over end across a surface. His wife Betty James named it "Slinky," a Swedish word meaning sleek or sinuous.

The Slinky debuted at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia in December 1945. Richard and Betty James produced 400 units for the launch and demonstrated the toy on a ramp in the store. All 400 sold within roughly 90 minutes at $1 each.

The original Slinky is made of blue-black high-carbon steel wire, with approximately 80 feet of wire coiled into a compact spiral about 2.5 inches in diameter. This material provides the tensile strength and flexibility needed for its characteristic walking motion. Plastic Slinky versions were introduced later, but the metal version remains the classic.

Since its debut in 1945, an estimated 300 million-plus Slinkys have been sold worldwide. The Slinky was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000 and was named one of the "Toys of the Century" by the Toy Industry Association. Over the decades, it has also seen use as a classroom physics demonstration tool.
