Smilodon populator

Smilodon populator was the largest saber-toothed cat to ever live, with an estimated body mass of up to 400 kilograms. This makes it significantly larger and more heavily built than any modern feline predator.

This massive prehistoric cat inhabited Pleistocene South America, roaming across environments from modern-day Argentina to Brazil. It was one of the apex predators of the region, hunting large megafauna.

Because of its massive bulk and relatively fragile canine teeth, Smilodon populator was an ambush predator that relied on powerful forelimbs to pin down its prey. Once the animal was restrained, the cat would use its enormous upper canines to deliver a precise, fatal bite to the neck.

Despite its frequent nickname as a "saber-toothed tiger," Smilodon populator belongs to an extinct subfamily called Machairodontinae and is not a direct ancestor of modern cats. It split from the ancestors of today's felines millions of years before its extinction.
