Smoo Cave

Smoo Cave is located on the rugged northern coast of Scotland, near the village of Durness in the county of Sutherland. It sits in the Highland council area and is one of the most famous natural landmarks along the North Coast 500 driving route.

Smoo Cave is unique because it is a hybrid cave, formed by two completely different geological processes: the outer chamber was carved by the sea, while the inner chamber was dissolved by freshwater. The inner section features a deep sinkhole and a waterfall, created by the chemical erosion of the limestone.

Yes, during the summer months, local operators offer small boat tours that take visitors deep into the inner chamber to see the freshwater waterfall up close. The boats navigate the dark, calm pool of brackish water, and guides provide commentary on the cave's history and geology.

The main outer sea chamber of Smoo Cave can be explored completely free of charge via a steep set of stairs leading down from the cliff-top car park. However, if you wish to take the boat tour into the inner chambers, there is a small fee charged by the independent operators.
