Solfatara Mudpots

The Solfatara mudpots are located in an active volcanic crater near the town of Pozzuoli, Italy. This crater sits inside the massive Campi Flegrei caldera and has been a site of geothermal activity since Roman times.

The name Solfatara comes from the Latin word "Sulpha Terra," which translates directly to "land of sulfur." Visitors to the crater can distinctly smell the sulfur gases constantly escaping from the underground fumaroles.

For many decades, Solfatara was a popular tourist destination with guided walkways, but it remains an active volcanic area with boiling mud and dangerous fumaroles. Access can be highly restricted or closed entirely following periods of increased geothermal activity.

In ancient times, the Romans utilized the natural heat and sulfur emissions of the Solfatara for medicinal baths and saunas. The volcanic activity was a well-known feature of the Phlegraean Fields, famously described by ancient historians.
