description Sowerby's Beaked Whale Overview
Sowerby's beaked whale, Mesoplodon bidens, is a toothed whale in the beaked whale family, Ziphiidae. It was the first mesoplodont described by science, after naturalist James Sowerby examined a skull from a male that stranded in Scotland in 1800 and published the species in 1804. The species lives mainly in deep, cold temperate and subarctic offshore waters of the North Atlantic and is difficult to identify at sea.
