SS John Harvey

description SS John Harvey Overview

SS John Harvey was an American Liberty ship destroyed during the German air raid on Bari, Italy, on 2 December 1943. Its secret cargo included bombs filled with sulfur mustard, which were released when the ship exploded and contaminated harbor water and survivors. Because medical personnel were initially unaware of the chemical cargo, diagnosis and treatment were delayed, contributing to casualties among Allied service members and civilians.
