St. Bartholomew Altarpiece

The St. Bartholomew Altarpiece was painted by an anonymous German artist conventionally known as the Master of the St. Bartholomew Altarpiece, who was active in Cologne around 1480 to 1510. Despite extensive scholarship, the artist's real identity has never been established.

The altarpiece is in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. The museum holds one of the most significant collections of Old Master paintings in Europe, including major works of late Gothic and Renaissance German art.

It is a prime example of late Gothic painting from the Cologne school, combining traditional gold backgrounds with increasingly naturalistic figure painting and richly detailed surfaces. The work also shows the growing influence of early Netherlandish painting on German artists at the turn of the sixteenth century.

The central panel presents Saint Bartholomew flanked by other saints in an elaborately detailed architectural and textile setting. The meticulous rendering of fabrics, objects, and spatial depth demonstrates the sophistication of Cologne painting during this period.
