Steamboat Geyser

Steamboat Geyser is located in the Norris Geyser Basin within Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. It holds the title of the world's tallest active geyser. During its major eruptions, water can shoot over 90 meters (300 feet) into the air.

Unlike the predictable Old Faithful, Steamboat Geyser's major eruptions are entirely unpredictable and can happen anywhere from a few days to several years apart. However, it experienced a highly active phase starting in 2018, with dozens of major water eruptions recorded. Minor eruptions, which only reach 10 to 40 feet, occur much more frequently.

A major eruption involves massive water jets reaching up to 300 feet high, followed by a powerful steam phase that can last for hours. Minor eruptions only spout water to about 40 feet and last for just a few minutes. Major eruptions often trigger intense vibrations that can be felt throughout the surrounding Norris Geyser Basin.

The first recorded major eruption of Steamboat Geyser occurred in 1878. Early park visitors and explorers were astounded by its sheer power and height. It remained relatively dormant for decades before becoming highly active again in the 20th and 21st centuries.
