Stephen Breyer is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1994 until his retirement in 2022. Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Breyer was generally associated with the liberal wing of the Court and was known for his pragmatic approach to statutory interpretation. Prior to his Supreme Court tenure, he served as a judge on the First Circuit Court of Appeals and taught administrative law at Harvard Law School.
