Steyr SSG 69

The Steyr SSG 69 is primarily chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO (the military equivalent of .308 Winchester), with some variants also produced in .243 Winchester. The 7.62mm chambering made it compatible with standard NATO ammunition, which was important for its adoption by military forces.

The Steyr SSG 69 was adopted as the standard sniper rifle by the Austrian Army in 1969, and it was also used by several other nations including East Germany's border guards and various European military and police units. It served as Austria's primary military sniper rifle for decades before eventually being supplemented by more modern designs.

The SSG 69 features a cold hammer-forged barrel manufactured by Steyr, a process that produces a durable and highly consistent bore known for excellent accuracy. The rifle was designed with a synthetic stock and rotary magazine, both innovative choices for a military sniper rifle in the late 1960s.

The Steyr SSG 69 was eventually superseded by newer models such as the Steyr SSG 04 and SSG 08, and production of the original SSG 69 has been discontinued. However, the rifle remains in use with some military and law enforcement units and is sought after on the civilian market for its reputation for accuracy and its historical significance.
